Origins of Florida’s New Residents

Florida is becoming a top choice for many Americans. In the 2022 tax year, even after accounting for those who left, Florida saw an influx of 125,316 households relocating from other states. Notably, many of these newcomers have higher income levels compared to those departing, which could provide a boost to Florida’s economy.

Taking this into consideration, SmartAsset analyzed the most recent IRS data to identify which states have households moving to Florida, as well as where Floridians are relocating.

Highlights

  • The highest migration to Florida is from New York. New York sent 51,967 households to Florida, whereas only 18,948 Floridian households moved to New York. This results in a net gain of 33,019 households in Florida from New York, with both states having an average Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) around $185,000.
  • Georgia is the leading state for Floridians migrating out. While 24,383 households from Georgia moved to Florida, more Floridians—26,876 households—left for Georgia, making it the primary destination for those exiting Florida.
  • Florida is attracting wealth from New Jersey and California. California contributed 24,011 households to Florida with an AGI of $187,025, while New Jersey had 23,128 households moving in with an AGI of $228,205. Florida’s net influx includes the second-most from New Jersey and third-most from California.
  • Households from Illinois bring substantial income. Ranking seventh, 17,728 households from Illinois moved to Florida, bringing an impressive average AGI of $231,364. In contrast, 7,973 households left Florida for Illinois with an average AGI of $102,996.
