It’s well-known that numerous Americans are opting out of homeownership to pursue renting instead. In 2020, renters in the U.S. filled 43 million housing units.
The Stacker team examined statistics from a United States Census study which indicated roughly 43,378,800 homes occupied by renters in the U.S. as of 2017. This accounts for 36.1% of all households nationwide. In 2019, renting proved more economical than purchasing a median-priced home in 59% of counties. However, by 2021, the trend reversed: Homeownership became more budget-friendly than renting in 63% of U.S. counties.
Stacker curated a rundown of counties in Wyoming where residents invest the largest percentage of their earnings on rent, utilizing data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Certainly, the prospect of saving money through homeownership is unfeasible for many Americans who either lack the savings for a down payment, have been denied a mortgage, or a combination of both.
