What Colorado’s migrant demographic resembled in 1900
Since the first flourishing English settlement established in Jamestown in 1607, waves of migrants have reached American territory in pursuit of a fresh start. From Irish emigrants escaping poverty to Chinese newcomers who settled in California amid the Gold Rush, over 86 million individuals legally migrated to the United States from 1783 to 2019.
There have been four significant surges of migration to the U.S., commencing with immigrants from northern and western Europe who sought land on the frontier between 1820 and 1880. The migrants tallied in the 1900 Census predominantly originated from southern and eastern Europe, attracted by the promise of industrial growth in America. As the period of world wars began, immigration significantly declined, yet following 1965, persons from Asia and Latin America commenced moving to the U.S. in large numbers.
While the national migrant population today and in 1900 is akin in percentage, fluctuating around 14% of the overall U.S. demographic, the actual figures reveal a different narrative. Presently, the U.S. accommodates 44.7 million immigrants, as opposed to just under 10.5 million at the time of the 1900 Census. Stacker compiled a register of the principal sources of immigrants in Colorado in 1900 by transcribing a formerly unrecorded dataset from the U.S. Census Bureau. Countries are arranged by total individuals who were born there.
Migrant entry to the U.S. was managed at the state level before 1890, with each state administering its own requirements and checkpoints. Initially, New York employed Castle Garden (now known as Castle Clinton) as its immigration processing center, yet within years recognized that a considerable inflow of immigrants required a more expansive facility. Ellis Island commenced operations on Jan. 1, 1892, greeting the first of over 12 million individuals who entered the U.S. through its gates.
