What Connecticut’s immigrant demographic resembled in 1900

Since the establishment of the first successful English colony in Jamestown in 1607, waves of immigrants have reached American shores in pursuit of a better life. From Irish settlers escaping famine to Chinese newcomers relocating to California during the Gold Rush, over 86 million individuals legally immigrated to the United States from 1783 to 2019.

There have been four significant immigration surges to the U.S., starting with immigrants from northern and western Europe arriving for land on the frontier between 1820 and 1880. The individuals recorded in the 1900 Census primarily originated from southern and eastern Europe, attracted by the promise of industrialization in America. As the global conflict era began, immigration rates plummeted, but after 1965, immigrants from Asia and Latin America started to arrive in large quantities.

While the present-day national immigrant population and the one from 1900 is similar in percentage, remaining around 14% of the total U.S. populace, the actual numbers reveal a different narrative. Currently, the U.S. hosts 44.7 million immigrants, in contrast to just under 10.5 million during the 1900 Census. Stacker has compiled a list of the primary sources of immigrants in Connecticut in 1900 by digitizing a previously unrecorded dataset from the U.S. Census Bureau. Nations are organized based on the total number of residents born in those countries.

Before 1890, U.S. immigration was managed at the state level, with individual state governments establishing their own procedures and checkpoints. New York initially utilized Castle Garden (now Castle Clinton) as its immigration processing center, but within a short span recognized that a substantial surge of immigrants required a larger facility. Ellis Island opened its doors on Jan. 1, 1892, welcoming the first of over 12 million individuals who would enter the U.S. through its gates.
