Fastest-expanding counties in Mississippi

What prompts individuals to relocate from one county or area to another? The common factors include employment, family, partners, and the overall expense of living, but various other aspects also influence this decision. For parents, residing near a well-rated school district is often a significant driving force. For younger individuals beginning their lives, being in a location with an active social environment might take precedence. And for those whose professional journeys are concluding after many years, seeking communities supportive of retirement is the goal—environments perceived as secure, provide access to healthcare facilities and recreational activities proportionately, and are budget-friendly for those on a fixed income.

This is certainly not an all-encompassing collection. The motivations for selecting where people choose to reside are as varied as the individuals themselves.

Regarding why specific counties across the United States have seen growth, migration is neither the exclusive nor the primary factor. Although over 1,800 counties noted population increases in 2021, around 73% of U.S. counties experienced what the U.S. Census Bureau describes as a natural decline. This represented a substantial rise from 2020 when 55.5% of counties observed such a decline. According to the Bureau, natural decrease arises simply when “there are more deaths than births in a population over a specified duration.” In 2021, the combination of fewer births and an aging populace that was also undergoing a higher-than-average death rate due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused this “heightened decline.”

Nevertheless, as previously mentioned, 1,800 counties throughout the nation have seen population growth in the past year, and a significant portion of them are located in Mississippi. Stacker has assembled a list of the fastest-expanding counties in Mississippi utilizing data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Counties are ranked according to the most substantial population growth from 2010 to 2020, based on the U.S. Decennial Census.
