Counties in Indiana with the Highest Life Expectancy

In the United States, life expectancy has notably increased, rising nearly seven years over the last fifty years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average lifespan was 70.8 years in 1970 and reached 77.5 years by 2022. Various elements affect how long an individual may live, including genetics, lifestyle habits such as alcohol and tobacco use, diet, body weight, and physical activity. However, where you reside also plays a significant part in this equation.

Globally, there are regions known as “blue zones,” where a remarkable number of people live to be 100 years or older. Notably studied are five regions: Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; and Sardinia, Italy. Researchers aim to uncover the dietary, lifestyle, and environmental factors that contribute to the longevity of these populations. Although it might not be immediately considered, the location significantly impacts one’s lifespan, which explains why life expectancy can vary among states and counties within the U.S.

Utilizing the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps provided by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Stacker has compiled a list of the counties in Indiana with the longest life expectancy. Life expectancy reflects the average years a newborn is expected to live, calculated using death rates and the average number of people at risk of dying during a specific time. Counties with unreliable data were excluded from this study. Mortality statistics were sourced from the National Vital Statistics System.
