$5,950,000 | Built c.1896 | 6 Bedrooms | 7.5 Bathrooms | 10,000 Sq. Ft. | 2.9 Acres
Initially created as a summer home for George Lorillard Ronalds, this impressive residence, known as Turtle Point, retains its magnificent appeal from its original construction overlooking Tuxedo Lake. Architect Bruce Price was commissioned by Ronalds to craft the home on a 2.9-acre waterfront site. Utilizing local materials, Price integrated substantial stone masonry and Tudor architectural features into the design. As reported by Brownstoner, Tuxedo Park emerged in the 1880s as a retreat for Manhattan’s elite, with many residences designed by notable architects such as McKim, Mead & White, Heins & LaFarge, Bruce Price, and Delano & Aldrich. These grand waterfront estates often served as secondary homes or summer cottages. Turtle Point is situated on a 2.9-acre peninsula, boasting over 1,200 feet of shoreline, two private docks, a boat house, a two-bedroom guesthouse, and lush century-old trees along with other landscaping. Further noted by Brownstoner, the historic estate was owned by comedian Whoopi Goldberg between 1998 and 2005. While the interiors have been updated to suit modern standards, much of the original charm remains. The interior features include exquisite leaded glass windows that are over a century old, tailored wood paneling, hardwood floors, and intricately carved mantels adorning all nine wood-burning fireplaces. Other remarkable attributes comprise a spacious 27-foot high living room, a large formal dining area, and beautiful covered stone patios. The lower level offers a luxurious indoor pool and spa. Accommodations include six bedrooms and eight bathrooms throughout the home. Following Ronalds’ passing, a 1912 real estate advertisement described the property as “Ronalds Cottage,” featuring a generous garage, summer house, ice house, boat house, garden, and shade trees. The property was later auctioned, with an option to include furnishings. Historical property records show it sold for up to $10.15 million in 1998 and was listed for $7.1 million in early 2018. Presently, Turtle Point is listed for $5.95 million with Tux Park Towne & Country. Cover image: Photography by Jill Swirbul.
