Counties with the highest life expectancy in Texas

Life span figures have been increasing in the United States, showing an improvement of nearly seven years over the past fifty years. (In 1970, the average lifespan was 70.8 and registered as 77.5 in 2022, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.) Numerous elements can influence how long one lives—from hereditary factors to alcohol consumption or smoking habits, nutritional choices and body weight, and levels of physical activity. However, the location of residence also plays a crucial part.

In certain regions around the world, referred to as “blue zones,” there exists a remarkable concentration of individuals living to at least 100 years. These five distinct regions—Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; and Sardinia, Italy—are extensively studied by researchers investigating what aspects of their diets, lifestyles, and surroundings foster such longevity. While it might not be an obvious factor, the place in which you reside can significantly impact your overall lifespan, which explains why some states and even specific counties within the U.S. report higher life expectancy rates than others.

By exploring the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps provided by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Stacker pinpointed the counties with the longest life expectancy in Texas. Life expectancy describes the anticipated average number of years a person can expect to live from birth, calculated using the number of deaths during a particular timeframe and the average number of at-risk individuals during that timeframe. Counties with unreliable or insufficient data were removed from the analysis. Mortality statistics were sourced from the National Vital Statistics System.
