Most rural counties within South Carolina
A remarkable quantity of U.S. counties contain 100% rural area—702, to be precise. Stacker assembled a compilation of the most rural counties in South Carolina utilizing statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. Counties are sorted based on the proportion of land area classified as rural, as recorded in the 2010 Census, with tiebreakers determined by the number of residents per square mile, according to 2020 five-year demographic estimates.
Per the Census Bureau, rural regions consist of any lands that are not classified as urban. To qualify as an urban area, a location must possess a densely settled core of census tracts or blocks and have a minimum population of 2,500, with at least 1,500 residents living in non-institutional buildings. Areas with populations of 50,000 or more are designated as urbanized regions, whereas those with between 2,500 and 50,000 are classified as urban clusters.
